You'll get a notification email. The sender is not informed (as typically they use forged email addresses).

If you need to access your mailbox from several different places or different devices, and want access to folders, use IMAP. Otherwise, POP3 is fine for most users.

There are several available, but we like Thunderbird. It's ideal for IMAP and completely free of charge!
